INTO THE MOUTHS OF WOLVES follows Ara’s exploration of art and life set against the time-worn backdrop of Florence city center, Tuscan hill-towns and Etruscan ruins. Through her atypical window into the private lives of aristocratic Florentines – contemporary descendants of the very families she studied in Art History class - Ara navigates tricky relationships abroad that beg the question, even if she chooses to stay, will she always be considered a foreigner?
Ara’s career may be young, but she is a self-described old soul. As she steers her building project to fruition, she will discover what it means to architect her own story, find power in vulnerability, accept help, and ultimately choose herself. A recent graduate of an ivy-league masters Architecture program in upstate New York, Arabella Stein’s thesis has just won herself a year-long internship in Florence, Italy.
Nearly immune to pressure, at least the kind that registers on her face, Arabella (Ara) is primed to power through a gauntlet of Italian building codes and literal roadblocks if it means executing her award-winning vision. Her plan to reclaim a dreamy villa in Fiesole as a contemporary art gallery with rooftop bar is flawless, as long as the structurally-insecure central staircase doesn’t crumble into the premiere floor, and there are no 12th century UNESCO heritage sites hiding in the foundation. Fortunately for Ara, her historic renovation is being cradled by the prestigious Studio Cavallini, where she is the singular female (and youngest) designer on the team.
If only the broody senior architect wasn’t so intoxicating, Ara would be able to put her head down and ignore how the clouds of charcoal dust he kicks up while hand-drafting accentuate his forearms. Determined to rely on no one else for her success, Ara would prefer not to be distracted during such a formative, career building year.
